Botanical description

Plants (11) 20 – 45 (60) cm tall, perennial, with trailing floating or decumbent shoots. Leaves 2 – 7 mm wide, flat. Ligules 4 – 5 mm, panicles 3 – 18 cm long, pyramidal but weakly spreading, panicle branches often flexuous or sinuous, perpendicular to panicle axis in ripe condition, 1 – 4.5 cm long. Spikelets are mainly 1-flowered, rarely 2-flowered on the branch tips, more or less thickly sitting on panicle branches, rounded- or oblong-elliptic. Glumes unequal, lower 0.8 – 1 mm, upper 1.6 – 3 mm long, sinuate on the tip, usually purple, less pinky or light green. Lemmas and paleas are almost equal, c. 2.5 mm long, glabrous, brownish or light brownish, with narrow hyaline margin. Anthers c. 1.5 mm. 2n = 40.

RECOGNITION

Catabrosa ledebourii differs from the related C. aquatica s.str. by mainly 1-flowered spikelets, by the less spreading panicle with fewer branching orders, shorter and flexuous or sinuous panicle branches, perpendicular to the panicle axis, often purple glumes and always brown lemmas and paleas.
